Under His wings

He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler. – Psalm 91.14

I read once about a competition to paint the perfect picture depicting peace. According to the story all ind of paintings were painted. Some had lovely pastoral scenes. Some had families gathered together before roaring fire in the fireplace. Some had a perfect placid lake without a ripple on the surface. There were all kinds of ideas about what peace was.

But the winner was a painting of a powerful waterfall surging and roiling and crashing down the rocks on the side of the cliff. The painting screamed of noise and violence and turmoil. It looked nothing like how most of us would picture peace.

Looking closer though there was something else to be seen. There is a cleft of a rock was a small bird and peeking our from under the bird’s wing were two or three baby birds. There, in the midst of turmoil, the baby birds found peace and safety and  protection on their nest protected by their mother’s wings.

In this world full of fears and dangers I can’t think of any better picture of peace and protection than a mother bird defending her chicks. There is that wonderful image of coziness and comfort and calmness with mother making sure that nothing is going to happen in the storm.

God protects you and me in the same way. When the storms come He comes along and wraps His wings of protection around us. The storms will be there, but we will have His covering presence around us if we rely on Him.
